COMMITTEE LOOKS TO RAISE WATER RATES - February 8, 2012
Last week, WTGR reported on a power point presentation provided at a
Greenville City Council special session meeting. That presentation
involved the Greenville Water Treatment Plant. Tuesday night, during
the regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the utilities committee
submitted a report calling for a raise in water rates for the city.
The rate increase for the water minimum price would go from $16.20 to
$32.40 for the first full billing cycle in 2012. The change will allow
the city to replace meters that are outdated. With new radio read
meters the City could potentially lower water loss.
Last week, Gary Evans from the water department informed council that
the city is losing water at an alarming rate, which in turn means the
city is losing money. Evans told council that in the last 11 years
their expenses exceeded their income by $414,542.
Currently, Greenville has the lowest rate in Darke County for
customers who use under 29 units of water and also hold one of the
lowest rates in the Miami Valley. With the change the only village in
Darke County that would have a lower rate would be Versailles. A
resolution will now be put together for council to adopt that will be
read 3 times at 3 separate meetings. The first reading is expected at
their next meeting on Tuesday, February 21 in Downtown Greenvillle. To
